Environment, Chemical-Free Cleaning and Costs

Grinders, solvents and sand are familiar in a machine shop, so buying a laser has to be justified. The question comes up once you have seen the price of the machine and need figures to decide.

Laser cleaning leaves chemicals, blasting media and cleanup out of the job, and the savings add up with every cleaning. You can find the machines and their prices on our laser cleaning page.

W2M Industries Oy is a Finnish company founded in 2017. The products are made in Finland, and every delivery includes operator training.

Non-contact, chemical-free and without blasting media

The benefits of laser cleaning can be summed up in three features, and each one describes what is missing from the job.

Non-contact means that nothing rubs against the surface. The machine does not press, scrape or grind. When set correctly, the base material does not wear, and the part keeps its dimensions even when the same part is cleaned for the tenth time. The difference is most noticeable in parts that are cleaned regularly throughout their service life, such as molds, where the cavity is expensive and every grinding pass would change it.

Chemical-free means that no chemicals are used in the job. Solvents, acids or detergents do not need to be bought, stored or disposed of. On a circuit board or a conductor component, the laser removes particles and oxidation, and nothing is left on the surface that would have to be rinsed off later.

Without blasting media means that no sand, grit or ice is thrown at the surface. The method needs no sandblasting media and no water, so nothing has to be sorted, dried or swept up afterwards.

On the shop floor, the benefits are tangible: there is no sand on the floor, no solvent smell in the air, and no barrels standing next to the cleaning station.

No blasting media or cleaning chemicals

In traditional cleaning, money is spent twice: first the substance is bought, then its disposal is paid for. Laser cleaning does not require blasting media or cleaning chemicals. Our laser cleaning page says the same: chemicals require waste handling and protective equipment, and a laser cleaner needs no blasting media or cleaning chemicals. However, extraction filters and protective lenses in the cleaning head need to be replaced as required.

Dirt that comes loose vaporizes or turns into dust, and local exhaust ventilation collects it. No chemical waste is produced, and no wash water has to be treated.

Little remains on the shopping list. The protective lens of the cleaning head is a spare part that can be ordered from our online store, and the filters in the local exhaust ventilation are replaced in due course. The extractor W2M Smoke Cleaner XL300 (in Finnish) has four filters: a pre-filter, a PP filter and two carbon fiber filters.

The difference grows over time. A sack of sand or a canister of solvent is a small expense as a single purchase, but they recur on every job, and their waste comes along with them. There are no purchasing costs for blasting media or cleaning chemicals, but filter and protective lens replacement costs must be included. Blasting media and cleaning chemicals do not have to be ordered, transported, stored or taken away.

Operating cost over the long term

In laser cleaning, the cost is front-loaded. The machine is bought or leased, and after that each cleaning is mostly labor time and electricity. Labor time gets shorter when protecting the work area and cleanup afterwards are no longer needed and the machine can be used almost continuously without cooling breaks. That is why the calculation should be made over years, not for a single job.

The price range is wide because there are many power levels. The mini cleaners cost €5,500–€7,250, the W2MCF-60BP €19,950 and the W2MCF-120X €42,500. In the heavy W2MCW range, the 1 kW machine costs €95,000 and the 3 kW machine €139,000. Prices exclude VAT. A flexible leasing agreement is available for all models, so a large machine does not require the whole sum at once.

Cost item

One-time or recurring

Price (excl. VAT), but it is free of charge with a weekly rental. Maintenance and spare parts are handled by our own service team.

A laser cleaning machine pays for itself through savings in material, waste and labor costs, especially when cleaning is done repeatedly. The savings therefore come from repetition. For a single project, buying your own machine is not necessarily financially justified, and in that case renting is the right tool. The lightest rental machine, the W2MCF-200X, rents for €450 per day or €2,250 per week (excl. VAT).

Calculate your annual costs

A general calculation tells you little about your own situation. Your own figure comes from four lines:

Consumables. Record how much solvent, sand, grinding discs or other cleaning agents you use in a year.

Waste. Add the collection, transport and handling of the waste.

Labor hours. Calculate the time spent on protecting the work area, the cleaning itself and the cleanup afterwards.

Comparison. Set the total next to the machine price, leasing or rent.

Once the lines are filled in, the conversation with management turns from opinion into a calculation.

Environmental and occupational safety benefits

For the environment, the most important thing is what is not produced. Laser cleaning leaves no chemical waste behind and requires no solvents. No sandblasting waste is produced, and a laser produces no acids and no wastewater. The difference shows, for example, in oxidation removal, where chemical pickling relies on acids such as nitric and hydrofluoric acid and on handling them in a controlled way. We cover this in more detail on our page removing oxidation and mill scale with a laser.

For the worker, the most important thing is what is not breathed in. According to the solvents page (in Finnish) of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (TTL), exposure to solvents occurs mainly by inhaling their vapors, and they can also be absorbed easily through intact skin. In the short term, the vapors cause irritation of the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, airways and eyes, headache, dizziness and a feeling of intoxication, and repeated or long-term exposure can cause permanent changes in the central nervous system.

According to TTL, about 10,000–20,000 workers are exposed to various solvents each year, and washing and cleaning tasks are one place where exposure occurs. About a thousand people are exposed to high solvent concentrations. The first piece of advice is to use a substance that contains less solvent or none at all. If that is not possible, the work is done in a separate space, ventilation is taken care of, and respirators and solvent-impermeable gloves are used. Laser cleaning involves no solvent, so this exposure is eliminated from the cleaning work. Our website puts the same point this way: the non-contact method is quiet and reduces exposure to hazardous substances.

Fire safety is the third benefit. The Finnish National Rescue Association (SPEK) defines hot work on its hot work information page (in Finnish) as work that produces sparks or uses a flame or other high heat. Laser cleaning is not hot work, so one person can do it without hot work arrangements.

Even so, safety is not compromised, because a laser is high-energy, regulated technology. The eyes are protected with OD8+ laser safety glasses, and if other people move around a fixed workstation, the area is cordoned off with laser safety curtains or protective acrylic screens.

The big picture

Laser cleaning reduces recurring purchasing costs for blasting media and cleaning chemicals and removes cleanup from the job. Learning to use the machine is quick: operator training typically takes four to six hours, and the machines have clear, easy-to-use menus.

Owning a machine pays off when cleaning is done repeatedly, when the base material has to be preserved, or when chemicals, dust or sparks are a problem at the workplace.

For a need that recurs only rarely, there are two options. You can rent the machine, or outsource the whole cleaning job to us, in which case we take care of the machine and the work. Renting suits a temporary, project-based or seasonal need especially well. With a rental machine, you also see how a laser works on your own parts before you make a purchase decision.

Our range includes the first mini cleaners on the market, and they are the most affordable way to start. The machine weighs about 7 kg and is suitable for cleaning weld seams and rust. Read more about mini laser cleaners.

Request a quote for your own application

Tell us what you clean, how often and with what method at the moment. Juhani Tamminen will calculate with you which pays off, your own machine or a rental, and will suggest a model with enough power for your most demanding job. If you currently use a solvent, sand or a grinder, also tell us how much of each you use in a year. That way the comparison is based on your own figures.

Frequently asked questions

Why laser cleaning if solvent is cheaper?

Solvent is cheaper as a single purchase, but it is bought again every time, and its waste has to be handled. There are no purchasing costs for blasting media or cleaning chemicals, but filter and protective lens replacement costs must be included. In addition, workers do not breathe in solvent vapors. The calculation should be based on a year’s cleaning volume and include waste handling and cleanup time.

Is laser cleaning an environmentally friendly method?

Yes. Laser cleaning leaves no chemical waste and requires no solvents, water or sandblasting media. The dirt that comes loose is collected by local exhaust ventilation. The job requires no blasting media or cleaning chemicals and no transport of them. Filters and protective lenses are replaced as required. No water is used, so no wastewater is produced either. The benefit grows with every cleaning.

What waste does laser cleaning produce?

The dirt, rust or paint that comes off the surface layer, which vaporizes or turns into fine dust. Local exhaust ventilation or an extractor collects it in filters. No chemical waste, wash water or spent blasting media is produced. The filters are replaced when they fill up. The amount of waste is therefore only what came off the surface, without kilograms of used sand or liters of dirty solvent.

How much does a laser cleaning machine cost?

A mini cleaner is available from €5,500, the W2MCF-60BP costs €19,950 and machines in the heavy W2MCW range cost €95,000–€139,000 (excl. VAT). Laser safety glasses and local exhaust ventilation are one-time purchases. A leasing agreement is possible for all models, and the machine can also be rented for a day or a week.

Is laser cleaning safe?

Yes, when used correctly. A laser is high-energy, regulated technology, so the operator wears laser safety glasses and the work area is marked off. The method is not hot work, and it uses no chemicals. If other people move around the space, a fixed workstation is cordoned off with laser safety curtains or protective acrylic screens. The training covers safe use and the settings.

Can I buy the cleaning work from you as a service?

Yes. If you do not want your own machine, you can outsource the whole cleaning job to W2M Laser. In that case, we take care of the machine and the work. The alternative is a rental machine, whose weekly rental includes product and safety training free of charge. Tell us what needs cleaning, how large it is and how often the cleaning recurs, and we will suggest the most suitable approach.

Is laser cleaning suitable for a small machine shop?

Yes. Mini cleaners are a natural way to start. The smallest model, the W2MFC-20BP, weighs 7 kg, runs on a single-phase 220 V connection and costs €5,500 (excl. VAT). It is suitable for cleaning weld seams and rust. If the need is irregular, even a larger machine can be rented for the duration of a project.

How long is the warranty on a laser cleaning machine?

Machines in the W2MCF and W2MCW ranges have a two-year factory warranty, and the mini cleaners have a 12-month warranty. The protective lens of the cleaning head can be ordered from our online store as a spare part, and a lens that fits machines of up to 300 W costs €80 (excl. VAT). Maintenance and spare parts are handled by our own service team.

Request a quote or rent a machine

Tell us about the job, and we will help you choose the model and power. Juhani Tamminen (laser sales, technical expert): +358 40 709 4605, juhani@w2m.fi.
